Carcavelos Beach Shines in Perfect Chapter 2024 with Dominance of Local Surfers

Portuguese surfer Tiago Stock claimed victory at the 10th edition of the Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong at Carcavelos Beach in Cascais, defeating Rob Machado (2nd), Dylan Graves (3rd), and Balaram Stack (4th) in the final.

With solid 2-meter sets and offshore winds intensifying in the afternoon, Carcavelos once again served as the stage for this special tube competition. Over 20,000 spectators attended to watch live performances from some of the best tube riders from Portugal and beyond. Throughout the day, some boards were broken by the power of the ocean, as top athletes carefully selected waves to progress through the rounds.

In his debut at the Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong, Tiago Stock benefited from his intimate knowledge of the beach where he learned to surf, choosing the best tubes while surrounded by an ecstatic crowd celebrating the victory of the local Carcavelos surfer. At just 18 years old, Stock took home the 20,000-euro prize and made history as the first trialist to win the event, also having won the qualifying event at the same beach in January.

“It was an incredible day, with great weather, great waves, and the beach full of people cheering for us. I’m really happy with how I started the final and maintained my lead throughout. Winning at home, surrounded by my family and friends, is a dream come true. I feel like I’ve reached the peak, and I hope there will be many more moments like this,” said the winner.

The dominance of local surfers also extended to the new generation, with Salvador Vala winning the New Generation Special Heat. At just 16 years old, he reached the semifinals of the main competition. An excellent wave scoring 8.25 points out of 10 put the Carcavelos surfer in the lead, surpassing Salvador Catarino (2nd), Jaime Veselko (3rd), Martim Fortes (4th), and Simão Prazeres (5th). For his victory, Vala received a 1,000-euro prize from cidade_fm, a 500-euro travel voucher from Globalis, and a 7-day stay at the Hiddenbay Resort in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. The young surfer also won the Maior Wipeout by Nixon prize worth 500 euros. For the organizers, this was a special way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the event, with two local surfers shining before the crowd at Carcavelos Beach.

“We believe our mission was accomplished. The offshore winds didn’t come in as much as we wanted, but we’re happy there was at least one great tube in every heat and several above-average scores. We welcomed a legend like Rob Machado and made history with the victory of a local hero, who came from the Trials to win the event. The feedback I received throughout the day was that only two events have had such a large crowd as we had here in Carcavelos today—the World Tour events in Rio de Janeiro and Peniche,” said Rui Costa, organizer of Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong.

Another standout was Brazilian Bruno Santos, who scored the best wave (9.90 points) and the best combined score (16.90 points) of the competition in the first heat of the day. Santos took home the Best Tube prize by 58SURF worth 2,500 euros and the Best Score prize by Go Chill worth 2,000 euros, honoring his invitation as a former event champion (2015). Among the surfers, Brazilian Lucas Chianca was also highlighted for his attitude and consistency in the powerful Carcavelos tubes, earning the Ricardo dos Santos Atitude by Corona prize worth 2,000 euros after reaching the semifinals. A final mention goes to Francisca Veselko, the current two-time national champion, who, despite not advancing past the repêchage round (where she even broke her board attempting a tube), made history as the first woman to compete in the Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong.
