Nic von Rupp Crowned Three-Time Champion

Nic von Rupp is crowned three-time champion of the Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong.

Nic von Rupp won the 9th edition of Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong at Carcavelos beach, Cascais, defeating Pedro Boonman (2nd), William Aliotti (3rd), and Aritz Aranburu (4th) in the final. With sets reaching 2.5 meters and light to moderate offshore winds throughout the day, Carcavelos was in top form for the entire competition, offering some of the best conditions this special tube contest has ever seen.

Nic von Rupp was the man of the day, scoring the only 10-point tube of the event in his quarterfinal heat. By winning a 100% European final, the Praia Grande surfer also claimed the prize for the best Portuguese surfer in the contest and the special three-time champion trophy. In addition to the victory cheque worth €12,500, the Portuguese surfer won the Best Tube award by 58SURF worth €2,500, the Best Portuguese Surfer award by Joaquim Chaves Saúde worth €1,000, and the Special Three-Time Championship award by Madpizza worth €2,000.

“It was a tough day, with many heats and many highs and lows. I felt far from winning. The guys started the final very well and I had to chase. But I had some opportunities and this morning when I woke up, I felt I was going to win. In a final, we all want to score 10 points, but sometimes 5-point waves guarantee the victory. I’ve been dreaming of a third win at Capítulo Perfeito since 2014. Winning at a beach where I grew up surfing and with great tubes makes me feel like I’ve returned to my roots and makes me especially happy,” said Nic von Rupp.

“It was an atypical winter, with few good waves at Carcavelos, which made this swell even more special. We were treated to the biggest swell the Capítulo Perfeito has ever had. We had the beach full on a weekday to watch a Portuguese surfer win. I can only thank all the partners who have always believed, the surfers, and the beach where I grew up, which today gave us one of the best surf competition days I’ve ever witnessed,” said Rui Costa, organizer of Capítulo Perfeito powered by Billabong.

Although he couldn’t defend his title from last year, Aritz Aranburu was one of the highlights of the day and won the Best Score award by Go Chill worth €2,000.

Another big protagonist of the day was 15-year-old Matias Canhoto, the undisputed winner of the New Generation award. With a wave near perfection (9.9) and another excellent wave (8.5), the goofy-footer from Peniche scored a total of 18.4 points. For his electrifying performance, Matias was awarded a travel voucher worth €500, offered by Globalis, and a 7-day stay at Hiddenbay Resort in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia.

Among the surfers, there was also a highlight for Brazilian Bruno Santos, winner of the Biggest Wipeout award by Nixon worth €500 and the Ricardo dos Santos Attitude award by Corona worth €1,500, given to the athlete with the most dedication throughout the competition.
